Avon House emerged triumphant from the Redbridge Mini Games Hockey Tournament after a nail-biting final against local rivals Bancroft’s. Locked at 0-0 at the end of normal time, the result hinged on a penalty shoot out in which our goalkeeper, George Ratcliff, performed heroically. Bancroft’s were unable to score a single penalty against him and this meant that Ben Myers’ converted stroke was enough to clinch the title.
George had earlier kept us in the game by saving a barrage of shots as Bancroft’s piled on the pressure, so it was only fitting that he would have his moment of glory in the shoot-out that followed. Prior to this he had enjoyed a quiet afternoon as Avon House won their group without conceding a goal and then beat fellow group winners Parkhill and Churchfields in the quarter and semi-finals.
After a scrappy start, the team improved its patterns of play significantly in the final stages of the tournament and every player made a significant contribution to an exciting success.
