Year 6 really enjoyed their trip to Fairlop Waters this week. The children learnt how to navigate a canoe and a sailing boat. They were able to stay relatively dry in the morning however a few unlucky children capsized their canoes! In the afternoon it was time for raft building. After much discussion and effort building the rafts, it was time to test them out on the water. Team Fairlop glided across the lake to win and even helped another team to dismantle their raft once they had finished.

On Friday 16th June, the Pre-Prep held our annual ‘Butty and a Brew’ with a fabulous turn out! The Pre-Prep Dads and Grandads joined their children for a delicious breakfast, with the Pre-Prep staff helping to serve the breakfast. It was a wonderful way to celebrate this special occasion and for the children to thanks their Daddys.
During the morning the Pre-Prep children all ran really well, thoroughly enjoyed themselves and received some well- earned stickers.
The Prep events ran all day, culminating in some exciting relay races and the Tug of War. Special congratulations to Dannika and Sheni for winning the Victrix Ludorum and Victor Ludorum for Years 3 / 4 and Years 5 /6 respectively.
In a keenly contested Inter-House competition, Cavell were the eventual champions with 387 points, followed by Pankhurst on 369 points, then Churchill on 353 points with Morris a further 22 points behind.
Thank you to all who spectated and created such a fun and supportive atmosphere and to the PTA for providing refreshments.
On May 26th, Avon House held our first ever ‘Little Big Me’ day. This day was designed to give children opportunities to learn about different career paths and to think about what they might like to be when they are older. Children from all year groups were encouraged to dress up in clothing to represent the job/profession they may wish to pursue in the future.
The day began with an assembly, led by teaching staff who told their own stories and explained their academic and professional journeys. Throughout the day, pupils took part in different activities centred around career choices. In the afternoon, they attended a mini ‘jobs fair’. Here, there were short seminars led by various professionals (parents and guest visitors) who explained what they do and answered questions that the children had.
On Thursday 18th May, Churchill held their fundraising event to raise money for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is a genetic disease that causes muscle weakness and progressive loss of movement and is the leading genetic cause of death of infants and toddlers. We had an amazing ‘Crazy Shoe Day’, where the children could come into school wearing their chosen ‘crazy’ shoes for a donation to charity. All the children had the opportunity to enter a ‘design your own crazy shoe’ competition for an entry payment, with the exciting prize of their own design being made into a pair of shoes for them. At the end of the day we had a delicious doughnut and ‘shoe’ keyring sale! The event was a wonderful success, with us raising £600 for the SMA Trust, who are dedicated to finding a cure and treatments for SMA.
On Friday 19th May, the quiz team took part in the first round of the inter-school Maths quiz hosted by New Hall School. There were lots of tricky Maths questions throughout the quiz and the children only had thirty seconds to answer each one. The children needed to calculate the answers quickly and work as a team. The scores were very close at the top and the audience were sitting on the edges of their seats in anticipation. We were delighted that one of our teams won the area heat and look forward to taking part in the semi-finals. Well done to Kaavya, Raul, Laiba and Sheni for taking part and to Krishan, Anika, Adam and Aarush for winning the round. We wish them luck in the semi-finals.
