Travel Council

Travel Council imageThe Walk Once a Week scheme has been running since 2005.  It’s main aim is to encourage children all over the UK to get walking.  It is now the largest national walk to school programme.

Avon House has a Travel Council consisting of children from Years 2–6, supported by two adults, who help to write the school’s Travel Plan.  We look at travel and transport issues in and around the school.  The Travel Plan looks at how pupils and staff currently travel to school with the aim of reducing car travel to school and increase safe walking.

The Travel Council meets every half term to discuss ideas and thoughts about how we can encourage more children and parents to walk to school.  We also discuss the school’s Travel Plan as this is a working document.  We participate in the Walk to School Week once a term and this encourages children to join up with another year group and walk into school together from the Sir James Hawkey Hall in Woodford Green.  Two year groups walk in to school on their designated day with their class teachers.  Parents are also invited to join their children on this walk.

There is a Walk to School chart displayed in each classroom and this is completed by the class teacher or the children themselves . The children are encouraged to walk a minimum of twelve times each month and they are given a badge at the end of the month.  These badges change design every month.  Throughout the year there are competitions in which all the children are able to participate, from Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6.

We currently hold a bronze level award accreditation and we are working towards a silver level.
