Our Learning Journey

The Avon House Early Years Foundation Stage includes our Foundation 1 and Foundation 2 (Reception) classes. Children can begin their learning journey on a full time basis, within Foundation 1, from the September after their third birthday.

Our youngest learners at Avon House School are nurtured in our Foundation Stage classes by a team of caring, trained staff, where each child is allocated a key person to support their individual needs. Here they follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, experiencing a mixture of child and adult led learning in a vibrant and engaging environment, with access to their own outdoor area.  Our aim is to develop the children’s emotional, social, creative and physical skills, along with their confidence, self-esteem and independence, which will enhance their future development as a learner. We tailor the learning to each child as an individual and have high expectations of their behaviour and learning.

The children’s learning is continually assessed and recorded, with our qualified and committed team planning next steps to support each child in reaching their true potential. Parents are regularly informed about their child’s progress and are also encouraged to be involved in their child’s learning through opportunities for parental involvement.  We believe in working closely with our parents to provide the best possible learning experience for every child.

All of the children in the Early Years Department follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS).  There are seven areas of learning which include three prime and four specific areas:

Prime Areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas:

  • Mathematics
  • Literacy
  • Expressive Arts and Design
  • Understanding the World

 

The children follow a themed approach to their learning, where topics are set in line with the children’s interests to inspire their learning. Our dedicated team carefully plan a wide range of activities that link to the topic and allow the children to explore all areas of the curriculum.  In addition, we enrich the children’s experiences through a range of other activities, some of which are taught by specialist teachers. These include French, ICT, Singing and Signing, Music and PE lessons, together with assemblies, themed days, performances, trips and outings.

Our School Day

The school day begins at 8:30am and ends at 3:30pm. We also offer a breakfast club facility from 7:30am to 8:00am and an ‘Early Risers’ before school club facility from 8:00am to 8:30am. There is also an after school ‘Tea Timers’ facility from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.

The children in each Foundation class have a weekly timetable that details the range of activities they will undertake each day, as well as the time of their morning and lunch time breaks.

We provide a mid-morning snack for Foundation 1 and a nutritious lunch is provided by our professional caterers, The Brookwood Partnership, for all of our classes. The food is freshly prepared and cooked on site daily, with a range of options for children to choose from.  We have a no nut policy and can cater for specific dietary requirements. The children have their lunch in the school hall with the Foundation Stage team and a team of midday supervisors, where they are supported with making healthy choices, developing table manners and their ability to use cutlery correctly.

 

Clubs

As well as our engaging curriculum, we also offer an exciting range of extra-curricular clubs. The clubs can be applied for on a termly basis.  The clubs we currently offer for our Foundation Stage are:
