On Saturday 3rd February the U11 Boys Hockey team competed in the annual tournament hosted by St Edmund’s Prep.
A late withdrawal by St Aubyn’s meant the draw was revised to a round-robin group of five teams comprising St Edmund’s A, St Edmund’s B, Bancroft’s and Howe Green House.
The first match against St Ed’s B saw an early lead (on long corners) overturned by three late goals in quick succession and a 3 – 0 defeat.
Our defensive frailties were evident again in the next match against St Ed’s first string and another 3-0 loss ensued.
Confidence was clearly an issue and our organisation, communication and general teamwork were all found wanting.
Next the team were to play Bancroft’s , clearly the strongest team on the day, who had just thumped Howe Green 6-0, whilst electing to see the game out with only six players ! Thankfully the boys were more resilient and, whilst again beaten 3-0,enjoyed a good deal of possession and territory.
The final group match saw a bottom of the table encounter with Howe Green, with the winner then playing in the 3rd/4th play-off and the losers packing their bags. Both staff and players entered the game with a measure of belief but this was rapidly dispelled by a couple of incisive breaks and some clinical finishing by the Howe Green forwards. The outcome yet another 3-0 loss.
Special mention to Sam in goal who, in the wake of some flimsy protection, produced a number of good saves and interventions and also to Alex who was pronounced our player of the tournament for his drive and energy.
Many thanks to those parents who attended for their support on a dank cold morning, for the restorative hot chocolate and for ferrying gum shields to some forgetful players.Categories: News
