On Friday 5th October the girls from Years 5 and 6 attended a football fiesta at Barnet Power League, hosted by Norfolk House School.

Our hosts had eighteen girls in attendance and so we agreed to play three matches against each of three six a side teams.

This was the first time many of our girls had been on an enclosed astro-turf court and they soon adjusted to the pace of the pitches and the rules involved.

The weather was particularly mild and sunny and all involved really had a thorough work-out and regularly needed to rehydrate.

Avon House A drew their first match 0-0 against Norfolk House A, before beating their B team 4-1 courtesy of four goals from Dannika.

In their last match, which was cut short due to time constraints, the A team beat their C’s 4-1 too with another Dannika hat-trick and a clinical finish from Daisy.

Avon House B had mixed fortunes first losing 4-0 against their B’s, then beating the C’s with an Amy strike before closing with a spirited 2-0 loss against Norfolk House A.

The Avon House C lost a tight first match 3-2 against Norfolk House C having led 2-1 through Lamisah and Sofia. It was then discovered that Miss Varah and Miss Lambert, in a novel role of joint first-time referees, allowed our girls to play the entire game with an extra player !

This clearly flummoxed the girls, for in their next match under Mr Evans’ eagle-eye and with the requisite number of players, the C’s were overwhelmed 9-0 by a ruthless Norfolk House A. The C team bounced back to contain Norfolk B to a 2-0 margin in their last match.

A special mention must be made of Dannika, whose finishing could teach our boys a thing or two and who would be a contender for the Golden Boot if she keeps this up !

All the pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and are keen to play more girl’s football.
