Outdoor Learning

Learning is not just what takes place solely within our school buildings. The outdoor environment is a space with enormous potential for learning in different ways. We are extremely fortunate to have such beautiful environments on our doorstep, with The Green outside of school, The Woodford Wells sports fields and proximity of Epping Forest, as well as our bespoke outdoor learning space onsite. Our pupils’ learning experiences can be enhanced by maximising the potential of using all of these vast and varied outdoor spaces.

Learning outdoors can be enjoyable, creative, challenging and good for our mental wellbeing. It also helps our pupils learn by experience and grow, as confident and responsible citizens, who value and appreciate the local environment and the world around them.

For subjects such as science, creative writing, maths, art, geography, digital media and nature studies, it allows children time away from the confines of a classroom, it helps to increase engagement and develops a wide range of skills such as team building, communication and problem solving.

At Avon House, all pupils, from Nursery to Year 6, become outdoor adventure explorers, with lessons planned across the curriculum to take full advantage of the great outdoors.
