On Friday 26th September, Avon House celebrated the European Day of Languages in a lively, inclusive way that got everyone involved and thinking about language, culture, bravery and community.
4FW started the day with a class assembly all about the European Day of Languages. The children even sang a rewritten version of Oasis’ famous song “Wonderwall”. It was a fun way to show how language can be shared and appreciated in musical form.
Reading in European Languages: After assembly, children from across the school were read to in different European languages. This was done by parent volunteers and VI Form pupils from Bancroft’s. This gave children an opportunity to hear both languages they may or may not know, to listen to pronunciation, rhythm, sounds and engaging stories in those languages.
European‑themed lunch: The school served a European‑themed lunch. Some children (and staff!) even tried something adventurous – snails! This encouraged trying new things, sensitivity to other cultures (even cuisine) and celebrating diversity with taste.
The day promoted respect for linguistic diversity, encouraged pupils to be curious, brave about trying new things (even food!) and helped them realise how much richness there is in different cultures. It strengthened the children’s sense of belonging, confidence and respect for others.
