Christmas in February!

Posted: 10th February 2025

Today, Year 5 and Year 6 Chamber Choir members represented Avon House at the Stratford and East London Music Festival, hosted by St Mary’s Church. Founded in 1882, the Stratford and East London Music Festival is the UK’s oldest music and drama festival. Our choir sang four songs across two categories, Christmas in February and Traditional Folk Song/Own Choice, with every pupil giving it their all with tuneful and expressive performances.

We placed second in ‘Christmas in February,’ singing ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ and ‘Over the Hillside’ with the adjudicator Rosanna Whitfield commenting; “Avon House looked confident and joyous in the performance. There was a lovely introduction to the pieces and a beautiful solo from Jia. The whole choir had a united sound and there was great contrast between the pieces.”

We were Highly Commended with our second performance in ‘Traditional Folk Song/Own Choice,’ with the adjudicator adding; “The opening number, ‘Skye Boat Song’, was unique with a shining solo from Maggie. There was a lovely thread woven through the whole choir. ‘Me ‘Ol Bamboo’ was so animated and the dance in the middle was a wonderful surprise!”

Everyone should be very proud of themselves. Although we were a little unlucky, we should all take heart in the fact that many people said how much they enjoyed our performance including the organiser who said she would have given us her vote!

Well done to all those who represented the school on this occasion.
