Year 6 WWII Style Baking

Posted: 20th November 2025

Our Year 6 pupils have had the wonderful opportunity to step back in time and bake their very own World War Two–style rationed carrot cakes, linking directly to their current humanities topic on WWII.

During the war, many everyday ingredients such as eggs, sugar and fats were strictly rationed. Although carrots were not rationed, they were often used as a natural sweetener, making carrot cake a popular treat for special occasions like birthdays. Our pupils enjoyed discovering how people adapted their baking during this time and, of course, tasting the results!

Here are some of the pupils’ reflections on the experience:

  • Neel “It was an excellent but messy experience.”
  • Zac “If you ever make a WWII rationed carrot cake, try it before you judge it!”
  • Dhiren “Never judge a cake by how it looks.”
  • Dinore: “I cook many recipes at home independently, but I think this recipe is the best of all!”
