Admissions

Choosing the right school for your child is an important decision. There will be many considerations that need to be factored in. We hope that by visiting Avon House you will see why many families are drawn to us. As a Prep School, we will ensure your child is well prepared for the next stage of education – academically, socially, confidently and well-rounded to meet the demands of secondary schooling.  Our class sizes are small enough to ensure your child will receive an education both in and out of the classroom. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Pupils usually join Avon House at 3+ and 7+, however we do have occasional spaces in other year group so it is always worth contacting us to find out if any spaces are available. You can also register your child’s name online so that if a space does become available our Admissions Lead can contact you to let you know.

Here is our step by step guide to applying for a place at Avon House Prep School:

    • Sign up for an open morning event or a private tour.
    • If your child is under 5 sign up for a ‘Play and Stay event’.
    • Complete the registration form (a registration fee is required).
    • If your child is joining us in Year 3 they will be required to sit our 7+ assessment.
    • If your child is joining us for other entry points please discuss this with our Admissions Lead.
    • If a place is offered, you are asked to pay an acceptance deposit, or decline the offer by the deadline date.

Please complete the following Enquiry Form

Nursery (Foundation 1 - Puffins)

Children can join our Nursery the term following their 3rd birthday. Nursery places are on a first come, first served basis; we do not hold formal assessments for children entering the School at this level, however we do arrange Stay and Play mornings for families to become familiar with the School and a Readiness for School discussion is required ahead of a child being able to start Nursery.

You can register your interest for a place in our Foundation 1 (Nursery) class for your child by requesting a Registration Form from our Admissions Lead. Please email admissions@ahsprep.co.uk to request the Registration Form and complete payment of a non-returnable £120 (amount equivalent to VAT) Registration Fee. You can register your interest anytime from your child’s birth onwards.

Closer to your child’s proposed entry date, the Admissions Lead will be in touch to discuss entry to the School. An Admissions Pack and Acceptance Form will be issued and a further £650 (amount equivalent to VAT) Acceptance Fee payment is required ahead of your child’s place being secured.

Reception (Foundation 2 – Kingfishers and Mallards)

We have a second intake into Avon House Preparatory School at Reception (the September following your child’s 4th birthday), for which families can register their interest for in advance by completing the Registration Form and paying the £120 (amount equivalent to VAT) Registration Fee. Please email the Admissions Lead – admissions@ahsprep.co.uk to request a Registration Form.

Parents and prospective Reception pupils are invited to an informal assessment meeting with the Head Teacher and/or senior member of staff approximately a year before the child is due to join us. During this session, we can start to get to know each other and parents can talk about their aspirations for their child whilst asking any questions that they may have about the School.

Reception places are not confirmed until after this meeting, at which point parents are required to complete an Admissions Pack, an Acceptance Form and pay a £650 (amount equivalent to VAT) Acceptance Fee.

Year 3 (7+)

We also have a 7+ Entry via our 7+ Entrance Exam which includes Scholarship opportunities.

Our 7+ Entrance Exam is held in the preceding Spring Term and the date and details are announced well in advance via the School’s website, although candidates may be considered after the set date.

Candidates are interviewed on a one-to-one basis and undertake an examination consisting of Mathematics, Reading Comprehension and Creative Writing tests.  The candidates who perform the best may also be considered for an academic scholarship.

Entry into other year groups

Places may become available in other year groups throughout the school year. Prospective pupils are invited to spend a Taster and Assessment Day at School and to participate in lessons within their current cohort so we can assess whether Avon House Preparatory School would be a suitable environment for the child.

We also request a report from the child’s current school and in some cases ask permission to speak to the school directly.

A formal offer of a place will be made subject to satisfactory completion of the Taster and Assessment Day and an entry date agreed with the Headteacher / Admissions Lead.  An Acceptance Form is then completed by the family and the Acceptance Fee of £650 (amount equivalent to VAT) paid.

While a great deal of information on the School can be found on this website, we do encourage parents of prospective pupils to visit us, either at one of our regular Open Events or on a personal tour of the School during a working morning.  More information can be found on our Open Events page of this website.

If you would like to arrange a visit please contact our Admissions Lead to arrange this (details below).

Further details of our Admissions Policy and Procedures can be found in the Policies section of this website.

Relocation from another area or country

Sometimes a move to a new area is required for work or family circumstances.

Whether you are moving from the UK or overseas, ensuring that a smooth educational decision is made requires careful planning. At Avon House we have assisted families make that transition successfully ensuring that the child settles quickly into a new environment and is supported in making new friends. In recent years we have welcomed families relocating from China, UAE, Australia and the USA.

We are happy to connect with your child’s current school or college both in the UK and internationally so the transition point enables your child to step straight into our classrooms knowing staff understand your child’s current academic ability.
