RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch

Posted: 24th January 2025

The whole of Avon House had a ‘pheasant’ diversion during lunchtime today, as we took part in the RSPB annual Big Schools’ Birdwatch. The Birdwatch is a chance for children to engage with nature and develop an appreciation for the wildlife in their own environment. Pupils from EYFS, Pre-Prep and Prep waited for their ‘tern’ and scanned the sports fields and our Outdoor Learning Area with binoculars, ‘swift-ly’ identifying and recording birds such as crows, sparrows, seagulls and a robin.

With the help of their teachers, they recorded their bird numbers and a list of birds discovered will be submitted to the RSPB.

The event coincides with concerns about declining bird populations and by collecting ‘quail-ity’ data on the species and numbers seen during the Big Schools’ Birdwatch week, young people from all over the UK can contribute to the efforts to track bird trends across the country.
