Topic Based Learning

Topic-based learning is an appealing and stimulating approach to learning with cross-curricular opportunities created through carefully chosen topics which change termly and are linked to the children’s interests. This exciting method inspires the children to learn all the traditional subjects in the curriculum in a much more approachable and exciting manner, as well as providing support and challenge for all pupils.

The topic-based learning is integrated with the National Curriculum to provide challenging and engaging lessons, as well as the flexibility to provide greater depth in key areas of learning. The children begin each term with an exciting ‘WoW’ day to immerse them into their new topic and also have an educational workshop or visit that is linked with the theme of their topic.

A firm emphasis is placed upon the teaching and learning of core subjects, where the children will have daily English and Mathematics lessons, along with two Science lessons a week. In addition, the children also have weekly Humanities (Geography and History), RE, PHSEE, PE, Spanish, Music, Art and Computing lessons, some of which are taught by specialist teaching staff. In Year Two the children also have Reasoning lessons.

‘We do loads of fun things. My favourite was making a gingerbread house for our topic Houses and Homes.’

‘I had really sticky fingers after making marmalade sandwiches to help me with writing instructions on how to make marmalade sandwiches!’

‘I loved creating a superhero vegetable and villain so I could write my own superhero story.’
