Additional Learning

At Avon House we have adopted a child-centred approach to our additional learning creating time and space for every pupil to see their true potential using the right strategies to enable learning growth.

Our Inclusion Lead, Ms Lewis, is an experienced teacher and practitioner in enabling pupils who need additional support to grow whilst giving our high learning potential pupils the tools to stretch and challenge them across all areas of the curriculum. We aim to make the School a happy place for all pupils to learn and grow spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (in line with our SMSC policy) as well as academically. At whatever level of study, it is our role to accommodate the pupil’s individual requirements.

Higher Learning Potential (HLP)

Extended learning opportunities are given to those pupils who are identified as being more able. More able pupils are those whose abilities in a subject area are consistently above the age expectation. Intervention groups outside the classroom are provided for pupils who require challenge and mastery activities beyond what is taught in class to further develop skills to achieve a higher level of the curriculum.

In both Pre-Prep and Prep HLP days are arranged to enable these pupils to work on projects that extend critical thinking.

High Learning Potential and Talented Policy

SEND

There are different ways and stages when a need can become apparent:

  • Staff observation
  • In lessons
  • Assessment procedures i.e. Early Years Foundation Stage Profile, phonics screening, reading and spelling tests, class based assessments
  • Parental concerns
  • Further assessment and screening undertaken by the Inclusion Lead, visiting professional or through the Sheila Ferrari Dyslexia Centre

Individual Outcome Plans (IOP’s)

IOP’s are used for pupils whose progress needs monitoring or does not correlate with their identified potential.  Parent and pupil meetings are held termly with the Inclusion lead and class teacher to set targets and review the previous goals. We believe hearing both the parents’ and pupil’s voice is vital to each child fulfilling their potential and believe that open communication is vital to achieving this aim for all children at our school.

Learning support

The Inclusion Lead works closely with class teachers to identify children who may need additional support.  In the first instance, reasonable adjustments and specialist resources may be put in place in the classroom to support children.  Teaching assistants are available in class to provide further support.  In some cases, children may benefit from interventions to support: phonics and early reading, spelling, and maths.  The Inclusion Lead takes an active role in supporting these interventions for pupils across the school.

Professional Support / Outside Agencies.

We are aware that from time outside agencies may need to be involved in your child’s journey. We are happy to receive reports or meet with those you are engaged with and use their recommendations to make such arrangements we consider are appropriate. As a school we are fortunate to have The Sheila Ferrari Dyslexia Centre as part of its group and this supports those pupils to have specialist dyslexia assessments and lessons. In some cases, it might be appropriate to seek advice from Paediatricians, Speech & Language therapists, Occupational therapists and educational psychologists. The school has a list of those it would recommend should parents require it.

EHCPs

We strive to be a fully inclusive School where all pupils are welcome including those with SEND.  We are happy to consider admitting children with EHCPs, if we feel we are able to meet the needs of the child.

EAL And Cultural Diversity

We are proud that we have pupils from a variety of cultures and backgrounds, and we value and respect all the languages and faiths within our diverse community. We recognise that the acquisition of multiple languages enhances both brain power and life experiences. To celebrate this, we name a ‘Language of the Month’ where pupils may learn some key words/phrases, as well as some interesting facts about the chosen language. We believe it is important for all pupils to be given the access and knowledge, not only to learn a new language, but also to gain an understanding of other countries and cultures.

So far this year, we have celebrated the following languages, all of which are spoken by some pupils in the School:

September – learning how to say ‘good morning’ in a variety of European languages to coincide with the European Day of Languages

October – Igbo and Krio to celebrate Black History Month

November – Russian

December – Arabic

January – Spanish

February – Hebrew

March – Punjabi
