The transition for pupils from our Pre-Prep department runs effortlessly with a ‘Journey into the Prep School’ day for them to experience in the lead up to starting Year 3. Our small class sizes give children the opportunity to thrive as confident and well supported learners both inside and outside of the classroom. The Prep classes are two form entry and often work together on collaborative projects.

Our broad and dynamic curriculum has been designed to engage and inspire pupils. The children are encouraged to become independent learners who are able to reflect on their progress and identify their own next steps. The children are taught English, Mathematics and Science by their form teachers, whilst most of the foundation subject lessons are delivered by subject specialists. While there is a strong focus on academic subjects, there are also weekly lessons for Games, Swimming and P.E, Computing, Reasoning, Art & Design Technology, Music, History, Geography, RPS (R.E. and PSHEE), French, Spanish and Current Affairs. In addition, the children in Years 3 and 4 have lessons in Critical Thinking and Years 5 and 6 have Debating. This year, we are introducing STEM learning to Avon House and through project based initiatives, will expose the pupils to integrated Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The children’s progress is regularly assessed and termly assessments are taken under exam conditions.

In Year 3, a thematic approach is taken and many areas of the curriculum are connected together within the learning programme. During Years 4 - 6, subjects are taught explicitly and the pupils focus on their preparation for secondary school. In Years 5 and 6, pupils are invited to take part in our Study Skills programme before school to refine exam techniques and prepare for 11+ and independent school examinations.

Year 6 pupils are given roles of responsibility which enable them to develop leadership skills. They encompass different areas of school life and help to prepare children for secondary school. Roles include head girl/boy, house captains, school, rights respecting and Climate Council chairs, sports captains and playground monitors. The children work with staff to implement activities and organise events.

Our pupils take part in many events with other schools including quiz competitions for general knowledge, maths and science. Every term, the Prep school takes part in themed days and weeks to stimulate curiosity.

"Thank you for the invitation to visit Avon House School for the forensic science events with the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils.  I am very grateful all for the hospitality and help I received.  I thought the pupils engaged and contributed very impressively with lots of enthusiasm, careful practice work and plenty of creativity and imagination.  It was good to experience the special Avon House culture and I really enjoyed my visit." - Sci High Science Events
