ISA A Cappella Competition

Posted: 8th March 2024

The Avon House Choir made their debut performance at this year’s annual ISA A Cappella Competition on Wednesday. Hosted by Leighton Park School in Reading and judged by Lisa Lynn, an award-winning performer and teacher and Pascal Blaschta, a performance artist, children from Years 4, 5 and 6 represented Avon House at a high standard, performing the sea shanty ‘Wellerman’. During the day, we were treated to a range of incredible vocal performances across three age categories – KS1-2, KS3, and KS4-5. Observing the other school choirs at the a cappella event gave our children the chance to see and hear different vocal arrangements, how harmonies can work in layers, how actions affect performance and how individual parts come together to form a harmonious whole.

Additionally, we also took part in a beat box and body percussion workshop, exploring the variety of pitches we can make with our bodies and voices. This culminated in a collaborative rap performance from our judges and the auditorium. When it was our turn to perform, our soloist and group ensemble singing were superb. While we didn’t place this year, everyone has reason to feel proud of their performance.

After the event Lavinia commented, “This is the second time I’ve been out with the choir in a competition. The best thing about today is getting the confidence to take part in front of everyone, being on stage and being part of the Avon House choir with the other children.” Eilidh and Seren said, “We think we did very well to sing as an ensemble. The best thing was listening to the other children singing, especially the seniors. They’re inspiring.”

Molly and Lillie added, “It was a great experience seeing the years above us perform as it shows us what we could be in the future. Our favourite was ‘Treasure’ sang by Leighton Park School in KS3, as it was entertaining to watch.”
