The main points of entry to Avon House School are Nursery (Foundation 1) from the September following a child’s third birthday, Reception (Foundation 2) in the September following a child’s fourth birthday and Year 3 via the 7+ exam.
Nursery (Foundation 1 - Puffins)
We do not hold formal assessments for children entering the school at this level, however we do arrange coffee and play mornings for families to become familiar with the school in the spring and summer terms prior to entry in the following September. Places are secured in advance by completion of a Registration Form and payment of the non-returnable £100 Registration Fee. A year before the child is due to join the school parents are asked to complete an Entry Acceptance Form and pay the accompanying £300 Entry Acceptance Fee, which is partially refunded when the pupil leaves Avon House at the end of Year 6.
Reception (Foundation 2 – Kingfishers and Mallards)
We have a second intake into Avon House at Reception for which families can register in advance by completing the Registration Form and paying the £100 fee. The parents and prospective pupil are then invited to a meeting with the Head Teacher or Head of Pre-Prep Department approximately a year before the child is due to join us, during which we can start to get to know each other over a cup of coffee and parents can talk about their aspirations for their child and ask any questions they may have about the school. The place is not confirmed until after this meeting at which point parents are required to complete the Entry Acceptance Form and pay the £300 Entry Acceptance Fee, which is partially refunded when the pupil leaves Avon House at the end of Year 6.
Year 3 (7+)
A few places are available each year to join the school in Year 3. Our 7+ assessment day is held in the preceding spring term and the date and details are announced well in advance, although candidates may be considered after the set date. Candidates are interviewed in small groups and undertake an examination consisting of mathematics, reading comprehension and creative writing tests. The candidates who perform the best may be considered for an academic scholarship.
Entry into other year groups
Places are sometimes available in other year groups. Prospective pupils are invited to spend a taster day at school and to participate in lessons within their current cohort so we can assess whether Avon House would be a suitable environment for the child. We also request a report from the Head of the child’s current school, and in some cases ask permission to speak to the school directly. A formal offer of a place will be made subject to satisfactory completion of the taster day and an entry date agreed with the Head Teacher. Registration and Entry Acceptance Forms are then completed by the family and the combined fee of £400 paid.
While a great deal of information on the school can be found on this website, we do encourage parents of prospective pupils to visit the school, either at one of our regular Open Days or on a personal tour of the school during a working morning. If you would like to arrange a visit please contact the School Registrar to arrange this (details below).
