Physical Education

Sport is an important and integral part of the curriculum and life at Avon House Preparatory School.  The physical education programme is delivered by qualified specialist teachers throughout the School and the extensive list of after school sports clubs continues to grow. Avon House Preparatory School is becoming increasingly competitive in a wide range of sports. The lessons give the opportunity for pupils to develop their understanding and ability across a broad range of activities.

Prep Department

On a weekly basis, the pupils take part in one physical education lesson, a games session and a swimming lesson which takes place at Loughton swimming pool. PE and games takes place at the Woodford Wells Club, to which we have easy access and it offers an ample amount of space for team games. We develop the pupils’ knowledge and awareness of health and the importance of caring for their bodies.

  • Autumn Games – Football/netball
  • Autumn PE– Cross country and fitness training
  • Spring Games – Tag rugby/hockey
  • Spring PE – Dance/gymnastics
  • Summer Games – Cricket/rounders/tennis
  • Summer PE – Athletics/handball

Pre Prep Sport

The pupils have two lessons a week. The physical education activities look to improve their agility, balance, co-ordination and ball skills. They are introduced to team sports and how to use their skills to achieve a goal.

Inter House Sport

The inter house competitions are a large part of school life. They give every pupil the chance to represent their house in a sports competition. Some of the competitions include cross country, football, netball and hockey. The pupils all compete for their house on Sports Day in a variety of track and field events. The inter house competitions promote sportsmanship and fair play.

Outdoor Adventurous Activities

Pupils in the Prep Department attend a day at a local activity centre where they develop their team work and communication. It is essential for them to work together to succeed.  Outdoor adventurous activities have strong links with the geography curriculum and consolidate other areas of PE such as developing confidence, fine motor skills and competence in the outdoor environment. These qualities are developed further during a week-long residential trip that Year 6 pupils enjoy.

Teams

The School is continuing to grow in size, which is great for the selection process for teams. We compete in different competitions within Redbridge such as football, netball, cricket, tag rugby, hockey, cross country, swimming and athletics. Pupils enjoy representing the School and it is important to feel a sense of comradeship and togetherness. The School also competes in a number of Independent Schools Association (London North) tournaments and galas, and we are the host of the Netball and Tag Rugby competitions for London North.

Ski Trip

Pupils have an opportunity to join with a local school to attend an annual ski trip. Here they attend ski school and learn the principles and skills to ski safely.
